The National Forestry and Grassland Administration released a five-year performance assessment of China's inaugural batch of national parks, revealing significant ecological gains across the protected areas.1 The assessment showed that 75% of ecological benefit evaluation indicators achieved an excellent rating.1 The five national parks—Three-River Source, Giant Panda, Northeast Tiger and Leopard, Hainan Tropical Rainforest, and Wuyi Mountain—span a combined area of 230,000 square kilometers.1
The parks have demonstrated substantial improvements in core ecosystem services and biodiversity protection.1 The Three-River Source National Park provides an average annual water supply of 80 billion cubic meters to downstream regions, while the Giant Panda National Park protects over 70% of China's wild giant panda population.1 Conservation efforts have reversed declining wildlife populations: the Northeast tiger population increased from 27 to 72 individuals, and the Northeast leopard population rose from 42 to 115, while the Hainan gibbon population expanded to 7 groups comprising 44 individuals.1 The Tibetan antelope population in Three-River Source has recovered to over 70,000.1
Beyond environmental protection, the national parks have generated substantial socioeconomic benefits for local communities.1 Approximately 50,000 local residents have been employed as ecological rangers, earning between 12,000 and 21,000 yuan annually in wages.1 The parks have attracted over 14 million visitors over the five-year period, while the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park alone generated an ecosystem production value of 208.966 billion yuan.1
