Trump has publicly stated that Ukraine should elect a new president, citing the country's continued attacks on Russian oil refineries and objecting to President Zelenskyy's opposition to a controversial diesel agreement.135 Trump announced that the United States would purchase Russian diesel and demanded that Zelenskyy "must stop" attacking Russian oil facilities, claiming these strikes have driven up diesel prices.156 Trump has also indicated he is considering relaxing sanctions on Russian oil.1
Zelenskyy has strongly rejected the arrangement, characterizing the diesel deal as "a gift to Putin" and warning that it would provide Moscow with crucial funding.25 Responding to Trump's call for new leadership, Zelenskyy stated that the Ukrainian people should decide alone who leads their country and proposed that if Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire, Ukraine would organize elections.8 Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones have continued attacking Russian targets, including data centers.68
The proposal has drawn international criticism and support for Zelenskyy. The United Kingdom's Defense Secretary Streeting declared that Ukrainians should decide alone who leads their country, reaffirming Britain's full support for the Ukrainian president.2 British Prime Minister Burnham spoke with Zelenskyy, reiterating complete solidarity with Ukraine and agreeing to meet in person within days, while the UK government pledged to strengthen sanctions against Russia.2 Germany's Foreign Minister Baerbock similarly rejected Trump's demand, stating that Germany fully supports Zelenskyy and affirming that we do not need to put less pressure on Putin to force him to negotiate—we need more.7 The German government committed to continuing coordination with European partners on Russian sanctions, opposing Trump's decision to temporarily lift diesel sanctions on Russia, which allows exports exceeding 300,000 tons.7
Some Republicans have also opposed the proposed diesel deal, invoking Reagan's legacy against the agreement.4
