China's Defense Ministry announced that the Chinese and Pakistani armies will conduct their first joint military training exercise in mid-to-late October in Korla, Xinjiang, under the codename "Karakoram-2026"1. The development comes against a backdrop of security challenges; in March 2024, five Chinese engineers were killed in an attack in northwestern Pakistan, followed by another incident in October 2024 in which two Chinese nationals died in an explosion targeting a Chinese-funded investment project1.
Prior to this exercise, China and Pakistan had conducted the "Warrior" series of counter-terrorism drills, though these had primarily involved special forces or border defense units1.
