Police in New Delhi have detained leaders of India's youth-led "Cockroach" protest movement, which has demonstrated against the Election Commission chairman over allegations of voter list manipulation. 12 Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach People's Party (CJP), along with fellow leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Lanka, were held for approximately 24 hours before a Delhi court ordered their release. 2 YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was also detained from his Gurgaon residence and subsequently released overnight. 6
The authorities deployed extensive security measures to suppress the protests, including deploying plainclothes officers and shutting down internet services in central Delhi. 12 According to police, approximately 2,500 demonstrators were detained in Delhi, with another 1,000 held preventively on the eve of the protests. 2 The Cockroach People's Party reported that over 15,000 people, including students, had been detained, while at least 7,000 protesters were arrested and released overnight. 23 Authorities closed dozens of metro stations across New Delhi to obstruct the demonstrations. 3
Upon their release, the movement's leaders vowed to continue their campaign. Interim protest leader Akankya Singh declared: "We will not back down! We will march to Jantar Mantar again tomorrow." 2 Dipke stated that Prime Minister Modi was "a disgrace to India as Prime Minister." 4 The movement leaders asserted that "the fight has just begun" and called for fresh rounds of protest. 8 The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Election Commission chairman Gianesh Kumar, citing allegations that at least 1.3 million voter names have been deleted from electoral rolls. 3
The Cockroach movement originated as a youth-led initiative, gaining momentum when Dipke posted a viral question in May asking "What if all cockroaches gathered together?" 3 The campaign later expanded to oppose education reforms, and Education Minister Dheerendra Pradhan resigned in July amid these pressures. 3 Four former state chief ministers were also briefly detained during the recent unrest. 2
