George Gibney, a 77-year-old former Irish Olympic swimming coach, will be sentenced on Monday at Dublin's Central Criminal Court for sexually abusing four young female athletes during the 1970s and 1980s.1 Gibney was convicted in July of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape.1
The prosecution of Gibney concludes a decades-long pursuit involving victims, law enforcement, and journalists.1 After Ireland's Supreme Court ruled in 1993 that he could not be tried due to statute of limitations restrictions, Gibney fled to the United States.1 A BBC podcast series titled "Where is George Gibney?" launched in 2020 to investigate his whereabouts.1 Between 2020 and 2022, four victims provided testimony to Irish police, prompting new charges and an extradition warrant.1 Gibney was arrested and extradited back to Ireland last year.1
One victim disclosed that she has retained "deeply personal and traumatic memories" and has carried "secret shame, hurt and confusion" for over half a century.1 Another survivor was only nine years old when subjected to the abuse.1
