Four Chinese government agencies have jointly drafted regulatory measures to standardize automotive products featuring retractable roof cabin structures.1 The draft notification, prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in coordination with the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the State Administration for Market Regulation, seeks to establish safety and operational standards for this emerging vehicle design.1
According to the draft guidance, manufacturers of vehicles with retractable roof cabins must conduct comprehensive safety assessments covering pinch-point protection, collision resistance, and wind protection for the roof mechanism.1 The proposed regulations require that manufacturers implement technical measures to prevent the use of retractable roof functions while vehicles are in motion.1 Additionally, these products must comply with existing standards such as the roof crush resistance requirements outlined in GB26134 for passenger vehicles.1
Effective January 1, 2027, manufacturers submitting new vehicle applications involving innovative designs will be required to provide detailed technical parameters for those innovations and undergo enhanced safety and environmental assessments.1 Products that fail to complete required testing, demonstrate insufficient verification, or submit false materials will be denied public announcement approval.1
