Manchester-based composer David Önaç has created a new work titled Atlantic Requiem that combines historical insurance documents with Catholic liturgy and testimonies of slavery to commemorate Africans who died in the transatlantic slave trade.1 The forty-minute, five-movement composition will have its premiere on Sunday at LSO St Luke's concert hall in London, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Singers under Grammy Award-winning conductor Malcolm J Merriweather.1
The work draws inspiration from Lloyd's of London insurance records and eyewitness accounts from 1791, including testimony about an enslaved African woman who was suspected of having smallpox, bound to a chair, gagged, and thrown overboard by the captain of the slave ship Polly.1 Önaç's composition weaves together contemporary classical music, jazz, gospel, and musical traditions from both sides of the Atlantic.1 The piece was commissioned by Culture&, a cultural heritage charity, and is supported by Lloyd's insurance company.1
