President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal formally established the Republican Patriotic Party on Saturday, marking an official break with former ally Ousmane Sonko, the leader of the governing PASTEF party.1 The two leaders had jointly taken office under the PASTEF banner in 2024 but saw their alliance fracture over policy disagreements, particularly regarding International Monetary Fund loan negotiations.1
Faye dismissed Sonko as prime minister earlier this year, though PASTEF retained its parliamentary majority and control of the National Assembly.1 Following his removal, Sonko was elected president of the National Assembly.1 Faye subsequently appointed Amadou Al-Aminu Lo as the new prime minister in May, with a new cabinet formed in June that excluded PASTEF ministers.1 The political realignment came as the previous Senegalese government's hidden debt of billions of dollars came to light.1
