Researchers at Tulane University have published findings in Nature Communications demonstrating that loneliness and social isolation are associated with the loss of nearly six years of mental health-related quality life.1 The study analyzed data from 277,489 adults aged 40 to 69 years old.1
The research revealed significant gender differences in health impacts. Men experiencing both loneliness and social isolation lost approximately 5.8 years of life free from depression and anxiety, while women lost about 3.7 years of such healthy life.1 When examining physical health outcomes, women who experienced both conditions lost 2.4 years free from physical disease, whereas men lost 1.7 years.1 According to Lu Qi, director professor at Tulane's Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health, who led the investigation, a healthy lifestyle can mitigate the effects of social isolation, though it has limited effectiveness in reducing the impact of loneliness.1
The findings underscore a growing public health concern, as a 2023 report indicated that approximately 50 percent of American adults experience loneliness, with nearly the same proportion experiencing social isolation.1
