A contributor to Donald Knuth's work discovered an error in Computer Modern Typefaces and received one of the legendary computer scientist's famously modest reward checks.1 The mistake appeared on page 1 of the book, in the first word of the opening paragraph.1 Twenty years after identifying the error, the author shared the experience of claiming Knuth's celebrated bounty system.1
The initial check amounted to $2.88, composed of a hexadecimal $1.20 plus $0.32.1 The author subsequently received a second check after Knuth credited a suggestion derived from the contributor's bug report as a valid improvement.1 Over time, Knuth has shifted his approach to these rewards; he no longer issues physical checks but instead presents certificates from a fictional institution, the "San Serriffe Bank," to acknowledge errors and suggestions in his published works.1
