The United States will hold midterm elections on November 3, with 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats, and 36 gubernatorial positions up for election.1 Women currently comprise a historic high of 152 members in Congress, representing 28.4 percent of the total, including 125 in the House and 27 in the Senate.1 Despite women making up 51 percent of the U.S. population, their representation in Congress remains significantly lower than their demographic share.1
The Democratic caucus contains far more women legislators than the Republican Party, with 95 Democratic women in the House compared to 30 Republicans, and 16 Democratic women in the Senate compared to 11 Republicans.1 Currently, 14 states have women governors, of whom 10 are Democrats and 4 are Republicans.1 The November elections present opportunities for further breakthroughs in female political representation.
Among the potentially historic outcomes, Democratic candidate Peggy Flanagan could become the first Native American woman in the U.S. Senate if elected to represent Minnesota.1 In Georgia's gubernatorial race, Black Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms is considered to have a 50-50 chance of becoming the nation's first Black female governor.1
