George Williamson, head of the Alan Turing Institute, has called for Britain to build autonomous AI capabilities rather than become overly reliant on foreign technology that could be restricted or shut down.1 "We shouldn't depend solely on systems we can't inspect or control, or that could be restricted or even switched off," Williamson stated.1 He emphasized that national resilience is critical, encompassing defense, national security, and infrastructure sectors, and that the UK should compete with the AI leadership positions held by the United States and China.1
The institute plans to concentrate on developing AI applications with public value and establishing robust safety mechanisms, while also monitoring threats from state-backed misinformation.1 The United States temporarily blocked Anthropic's latest model from being released outside America in June, and previously urged major AI labs to pause providing model testing to the UK's AI Safety Institute.1 Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced the establishment of a new national center to address state-sponsored disinformation campaigns.1 In 2025, Technology Secretary Peter Kyle directed the Turing Institute to shift its focus toward defense and security priorities.1 Anthropic has estimated there is more than a 10 percent probability that AI could cause human extinction before 2030.1
