Indian authorities detained the founder of the "Cockroach" movement, Abhijit Dipak, along with dozens of other protesters on Saturday morning upon his arrival in Delhi, as police moved to prevent a planned demonstration against Election Commission chief Guyanesh Kumar and controversial voter list revisions.1 The police also detained approximately 500 individuals attempting to reach the protest site, with an additional 50 described as "antisocial elements with criminal records."1 Other detained activists included Cockroach party vice chairman Ashutosh Lanka, Saurav Das, legal aid head Ratna Singh, and YouTuber Druv Rati.1
The government deployed roughly 43,000 police and security personnel across Delhi to maintain order.1 Authorities suspended internet services in central Delhi, closed more than 50 metro stations, and canceled multiple train services to two major railway terminals.1 The Supreme Court subsequently directed the government not to completely halt train services or fully shut down metro stations, emphasizing the principle of proportionality.1 The voter list revision has been particularly contentious, with approximately 1.3 billion names removed from the electoral rolls.1
Opposition leaders strongly criticized the crackdown. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated: "A government confident of its elections would welcome questions about those elections; a government that turns its capital into a fortress to avoid those questions only deepens the suspicion it is trying to suppress."1 Rahul Gandhi declared: "Guyanesh Kumar will step down. This government will step down. Then the repair of democracy will begin."1 The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party countered that "foreign forces" supported the opposition and were attempting to "destabilize India," according to BJP chief Nitin Nabin.1
