Yibin, known as the "First City on the Yangtze River," is undergoing a profound industrial restructuring. The city has fundamentally reoriented its economic foundation, moving away from traditional sectors such as chemical production and paper manufacturing concentrated along the riverbank to embrace emerging industries in new energy. 1
The scale of this transformation is striking. In 2015, coal and liquor production accounted for over 40 percent of the city's industrial output above designated size, yet by August 2026, the green and low-carbon industrial sector had grown to represent 55.9 percent of total industrial output. 1 The power battery sector exemplifies this growth trajectory: in the first half of 2026 alone, enterprises in this segment achieved industrial output of 76.57 billion yuan, a 42.6 percent year-over-year increase, with full-year power battery industry chain output projected to surpass 150 billion yuan. 1 Installed capacity for power batteries has reached 300 gigawatt-hours, while new energy storage projects operational by August 2026 totaled 19 facilities with a combined capacity of 926 megawatt-hours. 1
Established enterprises have adapted by repositioning themselves within the new industrial landscape. Traditional manufacturers exemplified by Tianyuan Group have shifted from conventional chlor-alkali chemistry toward advanced materials and new energy battery materials through relocation and technological upgrading. 1 Meanwhile, Heguang Tongcheng Photovoltaic Technology, a new entrant, accelerated deployment: the company progressed from groundbreaking to its first photovoltaic cell rolloff in just 147 days, now employing nearly 2,000 workers with maximum production capacity reaching 24 gigawatts. 1 Environmental conditions have improved dramatically alongside this economic pivot—the proportion of Class II water quality in the Yangtze mainstream within Yibin rose from zero percent in 2015 to 100 percent by 2025. 1
