A 29-year-old Omani co-pilot employed by FlyDubai attempted to hijack a flight bound for Tel Aviv on September 30, 2024, with the intention of crashing the aircraft into Israel's Ben Gurion Airport, according to UAE prosecutors.34 During the incident on flight FZ1073, the co-pilot, identified as Hamam al-Hammami, attacked the captain with an emergency crash axe in the cockpit, causing the aircraft to descend 4,900 meters in approximately 30 seconds.5 The plane carried over 170 passengers and crew members.35 Passengers and crew members subdued the attacker, and the flight safely landed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.345
According to UAE General Prosecutor Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, al-Hammami's radicalization began while studying in Australia between 2015 and 2017.3 The prosecutor stated: "Signs of extremism and terrorism first appeared in 2017, when he was studying in Australia."3 Al-Hammami claimed to have been inspired by the September 11, 2001 attacks to become a pilot.12 Authorities allege that he had deliberately taken two previous flights on the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv route to familiarize himself with the flight path and airport before attempting the attack on his third assignment to that route.45 The captain, identified as Indian national Smit Machchhar, unlocked the cockpit door after being attacked, which enabled crew members to intervene.3 Al-Hammami has admitted to acting alone in carrying out the attack.4
Al-Hammami's employment history revealed security concerns at multiple carriers. Oman Air had previously prohibited him from flying due to extremism suspicions.3 He subsequently joined Royal Air Maroc, which conducted a three-month training program before declining to retain him.5 FlyDubai hired him in January 2026.5 The RMIT University in Australia confirmed that al-Hammami had studied engineering at the institution but did not complete the program.3
