A disputed hepatitis B vaccine trial led by Danish researchers and supported by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has received approval to proceed in Guinea-Bissau.1 The University of Southern Denmark's ethics committee voted this week to authorize the study, which will enroll approximately 14,000 newborns, with half receiving the vaccine at birth and the other half receiving it six weeks later.1
Guinea-Bissau's health minister, Quintin Nantoto, confirmed that the project had previously been suspended following international protests but has now been cleared to move forward.1 The country currently plans to begin vaccinating all newborns against hepatitis B in 2028, delayed from an original target of 2027.1 Approximately 18 percent of Guinea-Bissau's adult population carries the hepatitis B virus.1
The trial has sparked significant ethical concerns. A member of the Danish ethics committee, Stig Bolsen Hansen, resigned on Friday in protest over ethics issues surrounding the study.1 Paul Offit, a prominent vaccine expert, stated that Kennedy would be unable to conduct such a trial in the United States because it presents substantial ethical problems.1 The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has allocated $1.6 million in funding for the project in its current budget.1
