SpaceX has acquired up to 14 megahertz of 800MHz low-band spectrum licenses from investment firm Grain Management to support its planned terrestrial mobile network, which will complement the company's space-based Starlink mobile service 1. The spectrum being purchased originally belonged to T-Mobile, which obtained it during its 2020 acquisition of Sprint and was required to divest the licenses under conditions imposed by the U.S. government on the merger 1.
The spectrum acquisition comes as SpaceX received U.S. approval this week to launch 15,000 satellites for an upgraded version of its mobile service 1. According to SpaceX, this premium low-band spectrum resolves a critical technical gap and will pave the way for Starlink Mobile to become a major mobile carrier in the United States 1.
