A software engineer deployed artificial intelligence agents to systematically search through the Dutch East India Company archives, discovering previously forgotten historical events buried within 4.35 million pages of digitized documents and newspapers.1 The research utilized a custom workflow powered by multiple AI models, including Claude Opus, Claude Haiku, and Claude Code, to accomplish in twelve hours what would have required approximately seventy years of manual archival review.1
Among the significant findings was documentation of a meteorite impact in India on August 6, 1812, near Cokurrgaum village, where a four-pound iron meteorite with a distinctive black surface crust fell and was reported in the Java Government Gazette on December 19, 1812.1 The research also uncovered detailed records of three Javan rhinoceroses transported by the Dutch East India Company: one captured from the Batavia forest and sent to the King of Kandy in 1738, where it died in the stable that same year, and two others—one male and one female—loaded aboard the ship Loverendaal from Batavia bound for Ceylon in 1740, both of which perished during the voyage, the male rhinoceros dying on the morning of the third day after departure and the female ten days later.1 Additionally, the project identified three previously unrecorded volcanic eruptions: Gankogoro volcano on February 3, 1722, Tjiremai volcano in early 1712, and Slamet volcano in February 1780.1
The GLOBALISE project, which converted the Dutch East India Company's handwritten files into searchable text, made this discovery possible.1 The engineer plans to open-source the research workflow toolkit, called Antiquity, enabling others to conduct similar investigations into historical archives.1
