Ukrainian forces have struck two of Yandex's five data centres within two days, severely disrupting operations at Russia's leading search engine.1 The Sasovo data centre in Russia's Ryazan region was heavily damaged on Wednesday evening, with operations coming to a complete standstill by Thursday morning.1 The Kaluga data centre was then targeted on Friday morning, resulting in partial infrastructure shutdown.1
The strikes have inflicted significant damage to Yandex's computational capabilities. The Sasovo facility housed two of three supercomputers used by the company for artificial intelligence model development, while the Kaluga centre—spanning 130,000 square metres with annual power consumption equivalent to that of 220,000 British households—also sustained operational losses.1 The Kaluga region's governor reported that drone attacks on the city's infrastructure injured nine people.1
Ukrainian officials framed the operations as a direct response to Russian military actions. President Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine responded in "mirror fashion" to Russian strikes on Ukrainian data centres, referring specifically to a previous attack on a Kyiv business district that killed four people, damaged a data centre, and left approximately 100,000 households without internet access.1 Ukraine's Defence Ministry characterized the strikes as actions designed to "force Russia to divert resources to repair damaged capacity."1
