French authorities have successfully recovered two Renoir paintings that were stolen from a museum in southern France, with six suspects arrested in connection with the theft.12 The recovered works are "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romanoff" (1910) and "Girl at the Well" (1886).12
The paintings were stolen on September 8 from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer.2 According to investigators, thieves cut through fencing and smashed windows to gain entry to the museum, using a chainsaw to cut the paintings from their frames.2 The burglars initially stole four paintings but abandoned two of them during their escape.2 The recovery was announced on October 9.1
Bryan Masson, mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, expressed relief at the recovery, stating that "these two paintings are not simply works of art. They are part of our city's history, our heritage."12 The Renoir Museum, which opened in 1960, holds twelve works by the artist.2
