A 65-year-old doctor is set to become the first person prosecuted in Britain for offences related to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.1 Vincent Brown, whose original name is Vincent Bakinia, has been charged with one count of genocide and six counts of crimes against humanity involving murder.1 He is accused of killing or encouraging the killing of Tutsi members during the genocide.1 The trial is scheduled to begin in October 2027 and is expected to last twelve weeks.1
Brown obtained his medical doctorate in Rwanda during the 1980s and later became the head of a family health department in Kigali.1 The alleged incidents occurred between April 6 and 13, 1994.1 Prosecutors have characterized the events as "the most destructive mass killing wave in modern history," noting that tens of thousands of people were murdered in Kigali during the initial weeks of the genocide.1 A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for January 15, 2025.1 Brown was released on bail of 100,000 pounds, which remains unpaid.1
The 1994 Rwandan genocide lasted 100 days and resulted in the deaths of approximately 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu individuals.1
