NASA has released a guide highlighting the most significant astronomical phenomena visible during October 1. The month features a rare occultation, two meteor showers, and a notable full moon that together create a series of viewing opportunities for observers across North America.
On the morning of October 6th, Jupiter will pass behind the Moon in an occultation lasting approximately one hour, an event visible from parts of North America 1. Just days later, the Draconids meteor shower will reach its peak on the night of October 8th, becoming notable as one of the few meteor showers observable shortly after sunset, with activity beginning around 9 p.m. EDT 1. The Orionids meteor shower will follow later in the month, peaking on October 21st and originating from debris left by Halley's Comet as it travels through the solar system 1. Observers in suburban areas can expect to see between three and six meteors per hour, while those in remote locations away from light pollution will have the opportunity to observe significantly more 1.
Rounding out the month's celestial highlights is the Orionids full moon, which will reach its full phase on October 26th Universal Time, though North American observers will see it fully illuminated on the night of October 25th 1.
