Abena Oppong-Asare, chair of the Labour-led House of Commons housing committee, has called on Finance Minister John Healey to release funding for the £39 billion Social and Affordable Homes Programme immediately rather than delaying allocation until after the next election.1 Housing associations have indicated that with adequate funding, they could deliver an additional 41,000 homes outside London over the next decade, including 25,000 social rent properties, with some construction beginning within three years.1
The government has already committed approximately £10 billion in initial funding, with plans to distribute £6 billion to London immediately, though significant portions of the remaining £13 billion are scheduled for post-election distribution.1 The National Housing Federation has identified a funding gap, stating that an additional £5.73 billion is required to fulfill all housing association proposals that are ready for development.1 Kate Henderson, chief executive of the National Housing Federation, remarked that "housing associations submitted bids with plans to build tens of thousands of affordable homes, but many organisations with sites ready to go and proven track records did not receive the funding needed to deliver these homes."1 The government's overall target across the current parliament is to construct nearly 70,000 council, social and affordable homes throughout England.1
