Tom Watson, a senior vice president at Palantir and former deputy leader of Britain's Labour Party, has cautioned that "mob rule" should not drive decisions on government contract awards.1 Speaking on a BBC podcast, Watson posed the question: "Do you want the rule of law to dictate procurement practice, or do you want mob rule to dictate procurement practice?"1
Watson's remarks come as Palantir faces mounting pressure from British political figures and unions over its contracts with the UK government. The company holds a £330 million software deal with the NHS,1 and is engaged in litigation with London Mayor Sadiq Khan over a £50 million police artificial intelligence contract.1 Despite the controversies, Palantir generates £427 million in annual revenue in the United Kingdom.1 Watson defended the company against criticism stemming from its work with Israel, characterizing Palantir as being "targeted" due to these collaborations.1
Opposition has also come from within Parliament, with Labour MP Chi Onwurah warning that Britain cannot become overly dependent on a single American company.1
