The Chinese Embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo released a security briefing on October 8, highlighting an increasingly complex and severe safety situation across the country 1. The advisory warned of multiple concurrent crises threatening both Chinese nationals and their assets in the region.
An ongoing Ebola outbreak continues to pose a significant public health threat, with the affected provinces—Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Upper Uele, Lower Uele, Kasai, and South Ubangi—recording a cumulative 8,603 confirmed cases and 4,148 deaths 1. Meanwhile, the security environment in North Kivu and South Kivu has deteriorated rapidly, with the Congolese military engaged in sustained clashes with the M23 armed group and other militants 1. Militias and M23 fighters clashed intensely in the Masisi area of North Kivu Province on October 7 1.
The deteriorating conditions have already directly endangered Chinese interests. On October 4, an armed robbery targeting a Chinese-operated mining camp near Kolwezi in Katanga Province left one Chinese national injured 1. The following day, a mine collapse at the Miringi artisanal mining site in Katanga killed 14 people and wounded one other 1. In response, the embassy instructed Chinese citizens to evacuate high-risk zones immediately and refrain from traveling to outbreak areas, while urging those still in the country to relocate to safer locations 1.
