At the 48th WorldSkills Competition held at Shanghai Expo Culture Center, 21-year-old Dai Xinyi from Hong Kong competed in the tile setting category, making her the sole female participant among 19 competitors in the discipline 1. Dai, a student in the Higher Diploma program in Building Services Supervision at the Hong Kong Institute of Construction, took up tile setting after encountering the craft during coursework at her institution 1.
Dedicated to her preparation, Dai took a one-year leave of absence beginning in September 2025 to train intensively for the event 1. Despite generating significant public attention as the only woman in her category, she downplayed the recognition she received. "I feel like I've been hyped up too much. After all, I didn't win any award, and my actual abilities are just average," Dai said 1.
