The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has postponed its planned ban on credit card payments for tax bills, responding to widespread opposition from small businesses and political pressure.2 The decision to halt credit card acceptance, originally scheduled to begin in December, has now been pushed back to June 30, 2027.2
The ATO initiated the policy change as part of a government payment system reform, citing that continuing to accept credit card payments would cost approximately 200 million Australian dollars annually in processing fees.12 Small businesses have emerged as the primary opponents of the ban, as approximately 5 percent of small enterprises rely on credit cards to pay their tax bills, using the payment method as a cash flow management tool.2 According to Andrew McKellar, head of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, around 250,000 small businesses would have been directly affected by the original implementation.1
Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced the delay and stated that it would "give the tax office time to consult further with small businesses to ensure it is implemented correctly."2 The reprieve provides what McKellar described as "much-needed breathing room" for affected businesses.2 The government is providing temporary funding to support the extended transition period.2 Opposition shadow treasurer Tim Wilson had called for the ban to be overturned entirely, characterizing it as "completely inconsistent" between the ATO's policies and those of other government agencies.1 The Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade have confirmed they will continue accepting card payments.1
