A former Ukrainian security official has broken silence in an exclusive BBC interview, alleging that a bombing attack targeting a wealthy businessman in Monaco in June 2024 was authorized by senior members of Ukraine's military intelligence agency.1
Vitalii Zhykovych, who faces charges related to the incident, named Vladyslav Reut, described as a high-ranking official within the HUR (Ukrainian military intelligence), as the person who planned the operation and provided the explosive device.1 The attack left businessman Vadym Yermolayev, his 13-year-old son, and his partner with serious injuries.1 According to Zhykovych's account, Reut justified targeting Yermolayev by claiming the businessman was "financing the Crimean annexation" through tax payments made to Russia from enterprises in Russian-occupied Crimea.1
Anastasia Berezovska, the woman who planted the bomb, was shot dead in Kyiv a week after the attack.1 Zhykovych stated that during a court hearing, Reut told him the bombing was not "authorized" and that "someone from civilian channels had ordered this target."1 Berezovska was reportedly promised a payment of $50,000 for carrying out the operation.1
