Curtis Flowers, a Black man whose case became emblematic of racial bias in the American criminal justice system, has died at age 56.13 Flowers spent over 22 years imprisoned after being tried six times for the same crime—a 1996 shooting at a furniture store in Winona, Mississippi that killed four people.2 He was arrested at age 26.2
The U.S. Supreme Court intervened in 2019, overturning Flowers' conviction and death sentence by a 7-2 margin.2 Chief Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing for the majority, found that prosecutors had illegally excluded five Black jurors during the sixth trial in 2010, violating Flowers' right to a fair trial.2 The final jury that convicted him consisted of 11 white members and one Black member.2 Following the Supreme Court's decision, Flowers was released on bail in December 2019.2 Mississippi prosecutors dropped all charges against him in September 2020.2 Upon his release, Flowers stated: "Today, I am finally free from the injustice that has held me captive for nearly 23 years."2
