An independent survey commissioned by Ofsted has exposed significant concerns about the impact of the new school inspection system on educators' wellbeing. According to the findings, 88% of school leaders reported that inspections have had a negative effect on staff mental health, with 29% describing the impact as substantial.1
The survey results have intensified scrutiny of the inspection reform, particularly given a 2023 coroner's ruling that linked an Ofsted inspection to the deterioration of headteacher Ruth Perry's mental health, ultimately contributing to her death.1 Meanwhile, more than 75% of schools that underwent inspections under the new regime stated they were treated with respect, collaboration, and compassion during the process.1
The findings have prompted divided reactions from education officials. Ofsted's Chief Inspector Matthean Oliver asserted that "data shows we are on the right track,"1 while Pepe Di'Iasio, General Secretary of the Schools and Universities Leading Association, warned that "many experienced professionals have indicated they would leave before facing another Ofsted inspection."1 The survey's representativeness was limited, however, as fewer than one-quarter of schools agreed to participate in the research.1
