NASA has selected three scientific investigation missions to prepare for the establishment of its first lunar base.1 These missions will be delivered to the Moon's surface through the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program as part of NASA's PRISM initiative.1
The GIMLI mission will investigate a pit in the Marius Hills region to determine whether it connects to a large underground lava tube, according to research led by Nathaniel Putzig of the Planetary Science Institute.1 Such subsurface cavities could potentially serve as shelters for astronauts.1 Meanwhile, the DISCO mission will conduct direct measurements of ice within micro-cold traps on the lunar surface, under the direction of Ariel Deutsch at NASA's Ames Research Center.1 A third mission, LEMS-SP, will monitor environmental hazards including micrometeorites, volatile substances, and moonquakes, led by Mehdi Benna of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.1 Together, these investigations will provide fundamental scientific support for sustained human presence on the Moon and lay the groundwork for future missions to Mars.1
