Road traffic injuries remain the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5 to 29 1. The burden varies significantly by region: the WHO European region achieved a 36 percent decline in road deaths, while the Western Pacific region saw a 15 percent reduction 1. In contrast, the Southeast Asian region recorded only a 2 percent decrease, the Americas experienced no change, and Africa saw deaths rise by 17 percent 1. Motorcyclists face particularly acute risks, accounting for nearly one-third of all global road fatalities 1, though wearing safety helmets can reduce the risk of death in crashes by more than sixfold 1.
In response to these challenges, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a new declaration on road safety progress, committing member states to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50 percent by 2030 compared to 2021 levels 1. Countries have pledged to develop national road safety strategies and implement a "safe systems" approach 1. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the preventability of these deaths, stating: "All road deaths are preventable, and no death is acceptable" 1.
