The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the World Health Organization have issued a joint statement confirming an outbreak of Ebola virus disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain in the country.1 Cases and deaths have been reported across multiple health zones in Ituri Province, North Kivu Province, and South Kivu Province.1
The Bundibugyo virus variant currently lacks approved vaccines or specific treatment options.1 In response to this gap, the government, WHO, and international partners are rapidly conducting randomized controlled trials of candidate vaccines and therapeutic approaches to contain transmission.1 The joint mission to Bunia included participation from Democratic Republic of the Congo Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba, Communications Minister Patrick Muyaya Katembyi, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.1
