Federal authorities have dismantled a plot to carry out a mass casualty attack at the Mall of America in Minnesota.12 An 18-year-old named Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud was arrested and charged with terrorism offenses after the FBI intercepted his plans for the attack.3 According to federal prosecutors, the suspect intended to kill as many as 60 people in the assault.1
The investigation spanned nearly two years before culminating in the suspect's arrest on Tuesday at a park.3 During the operation, Mohamud paid an undercover FBI agent $600 to purchase an AK-47 rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition for the planned attack.3 The suspect pledged allegiance to ISIS.2 Federal authorities charged him with acquiring firearms for purposes of terrorism, successfully preventing what they describe as a planned mass casualty event at the shopping mall in Bloomington, Minnesota.3
