The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced the results of its 2026 application round for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), revealing strong interest in artificial intelligence-focused extensions.2 A total of 1,615 applications were submitted by 481 different applicants.1 Among the AI-related domains drawing attention, ten companies applied for the .agent domain and seven companies applied for the .agi domain, with both OpenAI and Meta among the applicants seeking these extensions.1 Additionally, six companies filed applications for the .asi domain, including OpenAI.1
The 2026 round encompasses diverse application categories, with 333 brand applications, 16 community-based applications, and 15 self-identified geographic name applications included in the filing pool.2 Geographic distribution of applications varied significantly across regions, with North America accounting for 864 applications, Europe for 506, and the Asia/Australia/Pacific region for 218, while 21 international domain name applications were also received.2 ICANN has established a review timeline that includes a character string substitution period from October 8 to October 21, 2026, followed by a character string confirmation date on November 17, 2026, and a community feedback and objection period extending from November 17, 2026 through March 16, 2027.2 Kurtis Lindqvist, ICANN's President and Chief Executive Officer, stated that the announcement "marks an important milestone in the next expansion of the Domain Name System, demonstrating how organizations worldwide are innovating to establish trusted online identities, serve communities, and connect internet users."2
