A former head of Germany's federal intelligence agency has been arrested and ordered detained on suspicion of espionage and treason.12 August Hanning, 80, was taken into custody on Tuesday after a German court authorized his pre-trial detention.2
Hanning led the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany's foreign intelligence service, from 1998 to 2005.2 Prosecutors allege that starting in 2010, he agreed to pay a former colleague, identified as Manfred D, in exchange for obtaining classified information.2 According to investigators, Hanning received approximately 2,000 documents, some of them classified, through this arrangement until June 2022.2 He is accused of using these materials for private consulting work.2 Der Spiegel has reported that investigators are examining whether Hanning may have passed information to Azerbaijan's intelligence service, though Azerbaijan's media and broadcasting authority has denied any connection to Hanning or the investigation.2
Hanning's legal representative disputed the allegations, stating that "while he did possess classified documents, the accusation that he leaked the information contained in them to foreign intelligence agencies to harm German interests, particularly for money, is incorrect."2 The case has been described as potentially Germany's largest espionage scandal since the Cold War.2
