German political leaders issued stark warnings about escalating antisemitism in the country as the nation marked the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks. Chancellor Merz declared that "we are witnessing antisemitism rising in Germany—antisemitism that often goes unchallenged," and pledged that "the government will take every measure to combat antisemitism."1 He emphasized that "Jewish people must be able to live without fear throughout all of Germany" and assured Israel that "our Israeli friends can count on our commitment to ensure such crimes never happen again."1
President Steinmeier characterized the surge in antisemitism as having increased in "an intolerable manner since October 7,"1 while Bundestag President Klöckner stated that "antisemitism has no place on our streets or in political debate."1 The October 7 attacks, launched by Hamas and affiliated organizations, killed approximately 1,200 people and resulted in 251 abductions to Gaza.1 The subsequent war in Gaza has claimed more than 74,000 lives.1
In Berlin, approximately 1,700 people gathered at Bebelplatz to commemorate the victims of both the Hamas attacks and the ensuing Israeli military operations, with many waving Israeli flags.1 Despite his warnings against antisemitism, Merz has suspended delivery of certain military equipment to Israel due to legal concerns over the Gaza conflict and International Criminal Court arrest warrants issued for Netanyahu and Gallant, though he pledged not to arrest Netanyahu should he visit Germany.1
