Researchers from the University of Adelaide partnered with Monarto Safari Park in South Australia to investigate how feeding practices shape the behavior of captive African lions.1 The study involved three adult male lions that were provided with whole animal carcasses weighing approximately 200 kilograms every nine days, combined with an intermittent feeding schedule designed to mimic natural hunting cycles.1 Over three months of continuous 24-hour monitoring using eight infrared cameras, scientists observed significant behavioral shifts that brought the lions' routines closer to those of their wild counterparts.1
When fed whole carcasses on an intermittent schedule, the lions spent nearly three times longer eating than under standard feeding protocols.1 The animals engaged more frequently in tearing and manipulating their food, and they rested longer after consumption.1 During fasting periods, activity levels gradually increased, creating a rhythm aligned with wild lions' natural feeding cycles.1 According to lead researcher Lesia Hryhorenko, "Wild lions don't eat at the same time every day. They experience natural periods of feasting and fasting depending on hunting success."1 Associate Professor Alexandra Whittaker noted that previous zoo studies typically focus only on immediate post-feeding behavior, adding that "our results show that feeding schedules can influence behavior for days afterwards."1 The findings were published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, volume 301, article 107041.1
