A 28-year-old female technician at a research institute in Irkutsk Oblast, Siberia, died in late September after breaking a test tube containing pneumonic plague pathogens.3 A second suspected case has also been reported in the region.2 The World Health Organization has requested detailed information about the reported second case.2 Reports have suggested the plague may have originated from a Siberian laboratory.12
