Comedian and science fiction author Patrick Tomlinson and his wife were subjected to 55 swatting incidents between July 2022 and early 2025, stemming from a tweet Tomlinson posted in September 2018 about comedian Norm Macdonald.1 The first false emergency call to their Milwaukee home occurred on July 25, 2022, at 1 a.m.1
Despite the Milwaukee Police Department being alerted on August 3, 2022, that the residence was a target for such attacks—a recommendation the department rejected—law enforcement failed to prevent the incidents and conducted multiple illegal searches of the property.1 U.S. District Judge J.P. Stadtmueller ruled that officers had violated constitutional rights, leading to a settlement of $575,000 awarded to the couple.1 However, no police officers faced disciplinary action, as they were protected by qualified immunity.1
Tomlinson reflected on the ordeal, stating: "Most people don't realize that you don't have to be a celebrity or a politician to be targeted by this sort of thing."1
