Jaafar Ashtiyeh, a 58-year-old senior photographer for Agence France-Presse, was beaten by Israeli settlers and hospitalized with head and torso injuries while covering violence in the occupied West Bank.1 The attack occurred near the village of Aqraba in the northern West Bank, where approximately a dozen Israeli soldiers stationed roughly 500 meters away did not intervene.1 Despite Ashtiyeh's vehicle being clearly marked with "Press," settlers struck him with a rifle butt and seized his photographic equipment.1 During the same incident, at least six individuals opened fire, resulting in a Palestinian man being shot in the foot and requiring medical attention.1
The assault underscores the dangerous conditions for journalists documenting events in the region. According to Phil Chetwynd, AFP's global news director, the agency "strongly condemn[s] yet another serious attack on a journalist attempting to cover events in the West Bank."1 The incident coincides with the olive harvest season, when settler violence against Palestinian farmers has intensified.1 Israeli authorities have detained 19 journalists in the West Bank over the past three years since October 7, 2023, including an AFP contributor.1 Settlers involved in such attacks face prosecution only rarely.1 The West Bank is home to approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers living alongside 3 million Palestinians.1
