Francis Halzen, a physicist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his decisive contributions to the IceCube neutrino observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.1 Halzen led the development and construction of the IceCube facility, located at the South Pole, which has enabled scientists to capture high-energy neutrinos arriving from distant regions of the universe.1
At a press conference held in Stockholm, Halzen expressed his surprise at the recognition, stating, "It was a great surprise, and I obviously didn't expect it."1 He emphasized that the achievement resulted from the collective efforts of numerous collaborators, noting, "This reflects on the really courageous people who joined me in this project when really no respectable conservative physicist would have joined me. But many talented people did, and that's why I'm here."1
