An FBI whistleblower has filed suit claiming the Trump administration directed the agency to investigate Los Angeles anti-ICE protesters, despite their demonstrations being protected under the First Amendment.12 According to Jill Fields, a former supervisory intelligence analyst at the FBI's Los Angeles office, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Baiefsky instructed the field office to probe the protest activities in February 2025.1 Fields stated that the directive lacked operational logic and alleged her supervisor indicated the investigation was merely performative for the president.1
The investigation involved a ten-person "special immigrant squad" tasked with examining the protesters.1 Fields opposed these investigative efforts and was subsequently removed from her position, eventually resigning from the FBI last year.1 According to the whistleblower complaint, Trump himself requested the FBI investigation after viewing a TikTok video related to the protests.2 White House spokesperson Lauren Besch dismissed the allegations as "false."1 Fields joined the FBI in May 2016.1
