Three Afghan men have been sentenced to a combined 33 years in prison for the rape of a 17-year-old girl in Bristol, England.1 Mehrab Safi received 15 years imprisonment, while Salman Habibkheil and Awal Ahmadzai were each sentenced to 9 years.1 A 17-year-old youth accomplice was handed a separate sentence of two years and seven months in youth detention.1
The victim, who traveled from Somerset to Bristol for shopping, was first encountered by Safi and subsequently subjected to five sexual assaults by the four perpetrators.1 The offenders employed manipulation and alcohol to exploit the teenager before fleeing to France.1 They were arrested by French authorities while hiding in the back of a refrigerated lorry and were subsequently extradited to the United Kingdom to face trial.1
The sentencing judge rejected arguments that the men's personal experiences, including trauma from Taliban rule, could justify their serious crimes.1 Detective Inspector Jo Babbage stated: "This is not about culture, community or any religious belief. This is about deep-rooted misogyny and individual criminal behavior."1
