Clara Szuster, operator of Clara Beauty Lab, a medical spa in Manhattan, has pleaded guilty to illegally importing and administering counterfeit botulinum toxin products to clients.1 Szuster acknowledged in a guilty plea hearing on August 3, 2024, that she "illegally imported mislabeled botulinum toxin into this country and then mislabeled it for clients, knowing this violated the law."1 Between February 2020 and October 2025, she engaged in a smuggling operation that brought unauthorized injectables into the United States, primarily from South Korea.1
The consequences of these unlicensed procedures extended to patient harm. One client who received injections from Szuster's products contracted botulism and required hospitalization in Manhattan for treatment.1 Notably, Szuster lacks the legal qualifications to administer Botox injections; New York State prohibits aestheticians from prescribing or injecting botulinum toxin.1 She has entered guilty pleas on multiple federal charges including conspiracy to smuggle, distribution of mislabeled drugs, and conspiracy to distribute mislabeled drugs.1 Sentencing is scheduled for December 9, with a maximum penalty of 13 years imprisonment.1
