American televangelist Jim Bakker has died at age 86.12 Bakker co-founded "The PTL Club" with his then-wife Tammy Faye in 1974, building a religious broadcasting empire that at its peak attracted 13 million daily viewers.3 However, the empire collapsed in 1987 following a sex scandal and financial fraud allegations that led to Bakker's resignation.12
The downfall began when Bakker admitted to a sexual encounter in 1980 with Jessica Hahn, a former church secretary, resulting in his departure from the ministry.3 Hahn received $265,000 in compensation from ministry funds.3 In 1989, Bakker was convicted on 24 counts of mail and wire fraud and conspiracy.3 He served more than four years in prison before his release in 1994.3 His former wife Tammy Faye divorced him in 1992 while he was incarcerated.3
After his release, Bakker remarried Lori in 1998.3 In 2003, Bakker and his wife launched a new television ministry, which later became "The Jim Bakker Show," beginning broadcasts in 2008.3
