Wu Yuan, an associate curator at the Yunnan Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, has shed light on how prehistoric rock art preserves the narrative of human civilization's emergence.1 Recent uranium-series dating of the Gengma Mangguan rock art site in Yunnan has pushed back the history of prehistoric settled populations' rock art in China's southwestern region to approximately 4,220 years ago.1
The discovery underscores a significant shift in archaeological understanding. Wu Yuan notes that while Eastern and Western rock art displayed remarkable commonalities during their artistic infancy, their differences were more pronounced, foreshadowing divergent civilizations' trajectories.1 The oldest rock art in China with absolute dating evidence dates back to approximately 13,000 years ago in the Jinsha River region, while abstract geometric patterns on siliceous gravel at Blombos Cave in South Africa trace back over 70,000 years.1 Wu Yuan emphasizes that "artistic behavior is one of the principal characteristics distinguishing modern humans from ancient hominins," and notes that "the discovery of Jinsha River rock art for the first time broke the long-dominant 'Eurocentrism' in art origins theory within academic circles."1
Rock art across the Lancang-Mekong region documents extensive population interactions and cultural diffusion between East Asia and Southeast Asia. During the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age period, approximately 4,500 to 2,000 years ago, widespread human exchange occurred across Southeast Asian mainland and East Asia.1 Agricultural civilization spread along the Zang-Yi Corridor over a span of about 2,000 years, from approximately 5,300 years ago to 3,400 years ago, coinciding with the flourishing period of Cangyuan rock art.1 The rock art sites of Cangyuan, Phatat Khong in Thailand, and Phatat in Laos display strikingly similar life scenes, including inverted-triangle human figures, domesticated cattle, boats, buildings, hunting activities, and handprints.1 The Cangyuan region is home to three ethnic groups—the Va, Dai, and Lahu—among 16 cross-border ethnic groups shared between Yunnan and Southeast Asia.1
