Kenya's Health Minister Aidan Duale announced the country's first confirmed death from Ebola on Monday evening, October 7th 1. The deceased was a Kenyan citizen who had returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they contracted the virus approximately one month prior 1. The patient traveled through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi by air on October 3rd 1.
The victim presented symptoms including fever, chills, extreme fatigue, weakness, muscle pain, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, and subcutaneous bleeding at injection sites, according to the Health Minister 1. Authorities have identified 28 contacts, comprising family members and healthcare workers, who will be placed under quarantine 1. Additionally, 23 passengers and 4 crew members from the Uganda flight are being traced 1.
Kenya becomes the fourth country affected by the current outbreak 1. The epidemic, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus strain, has claimed over 4,000 lives across more than 8,400 confirmed cases since the Democratic Republic of Congo declared the outbreak on May 15th 1. Currently, no approved vaccine or treatment exists for this strain 1.
