Energy Dome
Energy Dome, a company founded in 2020 and headquartered in Milan, has begun operating its first commercial carbon dioxide compression energy storage facility on the island of Sardinia, Italy in 2025.1 The facility has a capacity of 200 megawatt-hours and can provide power to approximately 18,000 Italian households for ten hours.1 The system occupies an area equivalent to seven football fields and stores roughly 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide.1
The company's carbon dioxide battery technology offers cost advantages compared to lithium-ion systems in long-duration energy storage applications. For eight-hour storage systems, Energy Dome's solution is 10 to 15 percent cheaper than lithium-ion batteries.1 However, the technology demonstrates a round-trip efficiency of approximately 70 percent, lower than the 90 percent efficiency achieved by lithium-ion batteries.1 Energy Dome has announced plans to deploy 30 gigawatt-hours of projects across five continents globally.1 Additionally, the company has signed an agreement with Google to construct a 200-megawatt-hour facility in Ireland, which is expected to become operational by 2028.1
