Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola death, marking a significant escalation in the regional spread of the virus from an ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.12 The deceased was a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the DRC for seven years and fell ill approximately one month before arriving in Nairobi on Monday, dying several days later at 23:30 local time (20:30 GMT).1 Health Minister Aden Duale confirmed the case, which involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists.1
The case has triggered urgent contact tracing efforts, with at least 28 individuals identified as contacts, including family members and healthcare workers.12 Additionally, 23 passengers and 4 crew members from the patient's flight are being tracked.1 The DRC outbreak, caused by this rare Bundibugyo variant and declared in mid-May, has resulted in over 8,000 confirmed cases and more than 4,000 deaths in the country.12 Uganda previously reported 20 cases and 2 deaths from the same outbreak before being declared free of the virus by the WHO in August.2
